Baptism and Confirmation
Baptism
Baptism is the means by which we become members of the community of believers, members of the Christian church. For a Christian, baptism is the primary symbol of belief. It is a way of saying “Yes!” to God, who has already said, “Yes!” to us. We understand that Jesus began his ministry by being baptized by John in the Jordan River, and that his followers were also baptized as a sign of belief.
At St. Aban’s Baptism is an occasion for celebration! Baptisms may be scheduled to take place during special “holy days’, such as All Saints Day, Epiphany, Easter and Pentecost, or on another Sunday.
Baptism is open to adults, children and infants. For children too young to speak for themselves, their parents or guardians make promises of faith. To schedule a Baptism talk with a priest on Sunday morning or email us at St Alban's Email
Some Questions
Can we name Godparents that can’t be here?
Yes, no problem.
How many Godparents can we have?
Two is typical, but many people prefer more. There is no limit on the number of Godparents.
I bring my grandchild to church but her parents don’t attend. Can she be baptized?
Yes, as long as the parents don’t object. You will be responsible for raising the child in faith.
I was baptized as an infant but don’t remember it. Can I be baptized again?
We believe the first baptism “took” with you, even though you don’t remember it. God is faithful! However, as a sign of your growing faith, you can affirm your baptismal vows— please speak with a priest.
What if I need an emergency baptism?
We can do that, just call the priest.
I want my child to be baptized but I don’t believe in Jesus.
Baptism is first and foremost a sign of belief, so we ask you to wait until you have some degree of faith. At the time of baptism the parents promise to raise the child in the Christian faith.
Can we have a private baptism?
No, baptism means you are welcomed into the church, and takes place during a worship service.
I believe and follow Jesus, but my husband/ wife doesn't.t. Can we still baptize our child?
Yes, but your spouse must concur.
